The land that we call the Carolinas was home to more than 40 distinct groups of Native Peoples. Winthrop University, York County, SC and the wider Charlotte, NC metropolitan areas occupy the traditional and ancestral lands of the Sugaree, Waxhaw, Cheraw, and Catawba Peoples.
